Merbau comprises about 7 to 9 different species, which, however, hardly differ from each other. In addition, merbau is very similar to the wood species doussie/afzelia in structure, colour and properties. The wood has a reddish brown colour with copper reflections. It is a coarsely structured wood with only a few, very large, scattered pores.

Occurrence
Merbau is widespread in Southeast Asia.
Trunk and bark
The tree reaches a height of 7 to 25 metres and a diameter of 0.8 to 1.50 m, usually up to 15 m knot-free. Often with high reaching root attachments (tension-backed).
