Occurrence
From Southern Europe to Central Asia, Asia Minor, Caucasus, in the Orient, elsewhere cultivated and partly wild.
Trunk and bark
Walnut is a tree up to 30m tall with diameters up to 2m. Walnut trunk with mighty crown. Bark smooth when young, ash-grey with whitish corky warts on walnut, darkening with age with rough, long-cracked bark.
Characteristics and wood colour
Semi-ring-porous, early wood with coarse single-row vessels, late wood with small vessels Tangentially delicate veining, radially distinct stripes. Sapwood and heartwood clearly separated. Sapwood broad, grey-white and not usable. Heartwood in the root run and the fork branches mostly grainy. Colour of the heartwood depends on age and location, grey-brown to dark brown, often watered, striped and cloudy, matt shiny.
