Description

In addition to its high elasticity and toughness, yew is also known for its striking and decorative character. The wood gets a special appearance from interspersed burls with brown to black cores. Occurrence

Throughout Europe up to 60 degrees north latitude, especially in Greece, Spain and Portugal, formerly also in large stands in Switzerland and Germany, where the yew ( Taxus baccata ) is now protected; also in North Africa, Asia Minor, Iran, South Asia, Japan and India, as well as in North America.

Trunk and bark

Yew can reach a height of up to 20 m and a diameter of up to 1.0 m. The trunk is at most 6 m long. The trunk is knotless up to a maximum of 6 m, usually spindly and curved. The bark is thin, reddish brown, peeling off into small scales.

Characteristics and wood colour

The annual rings of yew are visible through a dark, mostly wavy latewood line. Yew is the only uniflorous conifer that has no resin in the wood or bark. The sapwood is yellowish-white, while the heartwood of the yew is brownish, reddish-brown, orange-brown, sometimes also mahogany-coloured or changing to violet. The sapwood and heartwood are well separated.
