Description

The appearance of this popular furnishing wood is determined by the alternation of light early wood and darker late wood clearly delineated on both sides. This creates tangentially strikingly beautiful veins and radially fine but also strong stripes, which unfold their decorative effect. The colour of the larch is yellowish brown and pale reddish to strong brick red. In addition, pencil-thick black knots give the wood a rustic look.

Occurrence

Widespread over Central Europe with focal points in the Alps, the Carpathians and in Poland, in other parts Larch ( Larix decidua ) is cultivated.

Trunk and bark

The tree of the larch reaches a height of up to 45m and diameters of up to 1.2m. Larches that grow in forests and closed stands are very straight and cylindrical and have no branches in the stem up to 2/3 of their length. The bark of the larch is smooth and ash-grey on young trees, later becoming up to 3cm thick and barky. Larch has a very high proportion of bark on the trunk and this is 16-24%.

Characteristics and wood colour

The annual rings of Larch are clearly visible in Larch due to the broad, dark latewood zones. Larch splint is narrow and light yellowish-brown. The heartwood is dark reddish-brown when fresh, later darkening.
