Numerous irregular groups of small black burls lie embedded in a light ground texture. The wavy sandy-brown annual ring lines of poplar burl are reminiscent of a pristine desert landscape, where the burls protrude from the sand as dark hills.

Occurrence

The black poplar is found throughout Europe, Siberia, Turkey, North Africa and India.

Trunk and bark

This tree grows somewhat slower than the other poplar species. The stem of the black poplar is very straight-growing and tends to burl. The bark is ash-grey at first, but quickly develops into a strong bark and later becomes grey-brown and heavily cracked.

Characteristics and wood colour

In structure and texture, this poplar species is very similar to the other poplar species, but it should be noted that the black poplar develops an intricate grain pattern at the burls. This grain pattern creates a lively and very decorative pattern.
