Description

Between the burl cores, you can sometimes see slightly indicated waves, which occur because of the annual ring pattern. The colour, which varies from orange-brown to pale reddish-brown, is reminiscent of the very similar picture of the sycamore burl or of a warm, friendly watercolour picture. Occurrence

In North America along the Pacific coast from Canada to California and Mexico.

Trunk and bark

Madrona is a stately evergreen tree that reaches heights of 25m and diameters of up to 0.6m in favourable locations. Madrona is very slow growing. The stem is developed very differently depending on the location and can be straight and knotless, as well as curved and inclined or shrubby and low growing. The bark of the Madrona is thin, reddish brown, peeling off in smooth plates, similar to the plane tree.

Characteristics and wood colour

The structure is mostly straight grained, but depending on the origin, twisted growth also occurs. The texture is very dense and fine-grained in Madrona. The sapwood and heartwood are not very distinct. The sapwood is consistently lighter than the heartwood and narrow in Madrona. The wood is reddish brown. The annual rings vary in width and are mostly wavy, which gives Madrona a decorative appearance.
