Wild service tree belongs to the wild fruit woods and is one of the most sought-after and highly prized wood species. The wood is decorative, versatile and has a scattered-pored, even and plain structure. The whitish-yellowish to slightly reddish or reddish-yellowish to reddish-brown wood is enlivened by often occurring pith flecks.

Occurrence
In Central and Southern Europe up to the Carpathians and the Caspian Sea, in sunny areas and especially on limestone soils.
Trunk and bark
Wild Service Trees reach about 20 to 25m, but can sometimes grow to 35m tall and up to about 1.0m in diameter. The bark is thin, longitudinally cracked, ash-grey and small-scaled (oak-like).
Characteristics and wood colour
Wood grain and rays irregular, vessels scattered, plain appearance. The annual rings are clearly visible. The wood is reddish-white, later darkening to brownish, without any heartwood in Wild Service Trees.
