Description

Everyone knows poplars as avenue trees because of their conspicuous growth form. The light wood, however, appears inconspicuous as it blends into any ambience almost without structure. The narrow and weakly pronounced late wood zones produce discreet patches. The colouring of poplar ranges from grey-white to delicate light brown with a slightly greenish shimmer in the core area.

Occurrence

The poplar is widespread throughout Europe. However, it is mainly found in Eastern Europe.

Trunk and bark

The poplar is fast-growing and has completed its growth by the time it is 40 years old. The trunks reach a height of 35 metres and a diameter of up to 1 metre. In its "youth" the bark of the poplar is smooth and yellowish-grey, then with time it becomes thick and strongly longitudinally cracked.

Characteristics and wood colour

The pores of the poplar are small to medium sized and scattered. The grain is clearly visible and straight, the annual rings and growth zones are also clearly visible. The wood is almost white to light grey and plain, early and late wood can hardly be distinguished.
